Over You

by Edan Milner

Verse 1:         Sitting in my office, I’m staring at my desk … what a mess.

                        Piled high with nonsense, things I’ve got to file … it’s been a while.

                        There’s a stack of memos totally unread;

                        Beneath that a dozen bills marked overdue;

                        One neglected ficus with its leaves half shed.

                        But beneath all that … I’m over you.

Verse 2:         Standing in my kitchen, I’m glaring at the stove … it’s gone cold.

                        Doesn’t matter really, can’t get in the mood … since there’s no food.

                        Just a stack of dishes dying for some care;

                        Beneath that a sink that’s old and rotting through;

                        Stuff I’m supposed to iron rolled up on a chair.

                        But beneath all that … I’m over you.

Bridge:           My hair’s grown long and shaggy,

            I’m due for bridge work, I believe.

            My pants are worn and baggy,

            I’m wearing my heart on my sleeve.

            I’ve let the world collapse on me, it’s true …

But beneath all that … I’m over you.

Verse 3:         Lying in my bedroom, I’m gazing at the walls … no one calls.

                        Letters all around me, words that came to mind … then left unsigned.

                        That big stack of clothes gets deeper every day;

                        Beneath that a ragged carpet needs shampooed;

                        Cobwebs from the ceiling float down on my face.

                        But beneath all that … I’m over you.
