Verse 1:         He blew her last paycheck on a microphone and deck,

He thought he’d write some songs to earn a buck;

Then when he tired of that, he made the rounds and sat

At the poker tables, waiting on his luck.

Chorus:           Now the woman in his life sees a different man each night;

She asks him if at last he’s found his way.

She knows she shouldn’t pry, for he gives the same reply:

Why don’t you take me as I am, he’ll say,

And love me for who I am today.

Verse 2:         He thought that he could score, and have to work no more

                        With a new nine hundred service he had leased;

                        And when that didn’t go, he turned to the rodeo,

                        But had to quit -- the horses made him sneeze.

Repeat chorus.

Bridge:           His basement’s full of projects left undone:

                        A woodwork set, some old TV’s, and golf balls by the ton;

                        A big old thing that might have been a bar.

                        God knows what he was thinking when he tore apart that car.

Verse 3:         He’s never been the kind that could dedicate his time

                        And follow up to make a dream come true;

                        The only thing he knows is this woman that he chose

                        Is all he really needs to get him through.

Repeat chorus.

Tag:    She knows he’ll change his plan,

            But she helps him when she can;

            Why don’t you take me as I am, she’ll say,

            And love me for who you are today.
